The V&A museum in London is hosting a sold-out Cartier exhibition featuring around 350 rare pieces of jewellery, some never seen publicly before. The exhibition explores Cartier’s impact on luxury design and its historical connection to the British royal family, running until November 16.
A captivating Cartier jewellery exhibition is set to dazzle London at the V&A museum, showcasing many previously unseen items from the luxury French brand adored by icons like Queen Elizabeth II and Rihanna. This retrospective, the first in 30 years, includes around 350 exquisite pieces, including brooches, tiaras, necklaces, and earrings adorned with stunning jewels.
Opening on Saturday, the exhibition is already fully booked for April and May, running until November 16. Curators have sourced rare items from global museums and private collections, featuring pieces belonging to historical figures, including King Charles III and Prince Albert of Monaco.
Highlights include the Williamson pink diamond rose brooch created for Queen Elizabeth in 1953, a diamond tiara worn by Clementine Churchill at the queen’s coronation, and a diamond engagement ring once offered to Grace Kelly. Curator Helen Molesworth noted, “We wanted to showcase … the legacy of Cartier over a hundred years.”
Founded in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, the brand has a history of seeking inspiration from around the world, including Asia and the Middle East. Molesworth explains, “One of the great successes of Cartier is staying ahead of the times, being the trendsetters, and realising that they are keeping up with the changing world around them.”
The exhibition highlights the brand’s relationship with the British royal family dating back to King Edward VII, who named Cartier as his official jewellers in 1904. The Halo Tiara, adorned with 800 diamonds, has a storied history, worn by Princess Margaret and most recently by Kate Middleton during her 2011 wedding.
