Sam Winston’s exhibition, ‘Birthday’, at London’s Kaleid Editions showcases the visual power of statistics by documenting every birth and death worldwide over 12 hours, represented through tiny bubble-like circles. These striking images illustrate the dynamic nature of global population changes.
Winston’s fascination with words is another significant aspect of his art. As a dyslexic, he interprets words as images, which he reconfigures to create a new aesthetic. His series ‘Passion rage solace’, inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, separates the text into three emotional categories, resulting in compelling visual collages.
The artist is also presenting his new book, ‘Orphan’, in a unique wall-hanging format. This project encapsulates both the final narrative and the writing process, with cut-out words highlighting the evolution of the story. “It’s a book in which you have both the story and its history on the same page,” Winston notes.
Winston emphasizes the significance of the creative process; he will work live in the gallery throughout the exhibition, providing visitors with an opportunity to witness the creation of new pieces. One notable work, ‘Kali’, features a broken frame symbolising the cycle of destruction and rebirth, embodying the essence of transformation.
