Self Esteem debuted 11 new songs in her theatrical presentation ‘A Complicated Woman’ at London’s Duke Of York’s Theatre. The album, releasing April 25, features a mix of old favourites and new tracks. The ambitious performance style promises an engaging experience, with more shows scheduled and a UK tour starting in September.
Self Esteem, also known as Rebecca Lucy Taylor, premiered 11 new tracks at the opening night of her theatrical show ‘A Complicated Woman’ in London. This album, featuring 12 tracks, is set for release on April 25. It follows her acclaimed 2021 album, ‘Prioritise Pleasure’.
The special performance took place at Duke Of York’s Theatre, showcasing her entire new album, including the previously performed single ‘Mother’, along with 11 other live debuts. Popular older tracks such as ‘Fucking Wizardry’ and ‘You Forever’ were also included in the setlist.
The show, divided into four acts, featured Taylor in garments from the album’s cover. Highlights included choreography accompanying ‘69’, where she recounted a humorous list of sex positions. Taylor engaged with the audience, jokingly expressing her stance on male frontmen performing acoustically.
The performance was collaboratively designed by Taylor and Tony Award-winning designer Tom Scutt, creating an ambitious, quasi-theatrical experience that combined elements of a concert with theatrical storytelling. Following the opening night, Self Esteem plans to perform the show multiple times at the theatre.
Taylor described the new album as made “for stadiums”, drawing inspiration from artists like Coldplay. She acknowledged the challenges faced by women in pop music but expressed confidence in her creative vision. Her UK and Ireland tour is scheduled to begin this September, covering multiple cities, including two performances at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.
Self Esteem’s theatrical presentation of ‘A Complicated Woman’ highlights her artistic growth with 11 new tracks set for release. The show blended concert energy with theatrical narrative, showcasing her uniqueness as an artist. Taylor is gearing up for a UK and Ireland tour post-album launch, where she aims to continue breaking barriers for women in the music industry.
