The Sony World Photography Awards 2025 unveiled its winners in a gala event in London, celebrating outstanding contemporary photography. Key prizes included Youth Photographer of the Year Daniel Dian-Ji Wu, Student Photographer of the Year Micaela Valdivia Medina, and Photographer of the Year Zed Nelson. Highlights include various professional category winners and the Outstanding Contribution award presented to Susan Meiselas. The exhibition runs from 17 April to 5 May at Somerset House.

The overall winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025 were revealed at a gala in London, celebrating contemporary photographers globally. Key industry figures came together for this significant event, showcasing remarkable work and enhancing artists’ visibility.

The Youth Photographer of the Year was awarded to 16-year-old Daniel Dian-Ji Wu from Taiwan for his captivating image of a Californian skater. The Student Photographer of the Year title went to Peruvian student Micaela Valdivia Medina for her series on women’s prisons, earning her university approximately €30,000 in Sony gear and promotional opportunities.

French photographer Olivier Unia won the Open Photographer of the Year for his image “Tbourida La Chute,” which depicts a Moroccan equestrian performance. He received $5,000, Sony equipment, and opportunities for media promotion. Zed Nelson from the UK was named Photographer of the Year for “The Anthropocene Illusion,” exploring humanity’s impact on the environment over six years, receiving $25,000 and further exhibition opportunities.

The event also recognised ten winners across various professional categories,

– Creative: Rhiannon Adam (UK) for Rhi-Entry
– Documentary Projects: Toby Binder (Germany) for Divided Youth of Belfast
– Environment: Nicolás Garrido Huguet (Peru) for Alquimia Textil
– Landscape: Seido Kino (Japan) for The Strata of Time
– Perspectives: Laura Pannack (UK) for The Journey Home from School
– Portraiture: Gui Christ (Brazil) for M’kumba
– Sport: Chantal Pinzi (Italy) for Shred the Patriarchy
– Still Life: Peter Franck (Germany) for Still Waiting
– Wildlife & Nature: Zed Nelson (UK) for The Anthropocene Illusion.

Susan Meiselas received the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award for her lifetime achievements in documenting often overlooked communities. The Sony World Photography Awards 2025 exhibition, featuring these outstanding images, opens from 17 April to 5 May at Somerset House, London.
