A musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic, “The Great Gatsby,” has premiered in London’s West End, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the extravagant world of Jay Gatsby’s parties. Director Marc Bruni stated, “We’re out to deliver all of the opulence of Jay Gatsby and then also to tell this story about whether the American dream is possible.”
The story is narrated by Gatsby’s neighbour, Nick Carraway, who becomes intertwined in Gatsby’s life. However, Bruni noted that the musical explores the perspectives of all characters.
Stars Jamie Muscato as Gatsby, while Frances Mayli McCann plays Daisy, Gatsby’s lost love. McCann described Daisy as a tragic figure caught in a wealth-driven marriage. She remarked, “Daisy is this beautifully tragic woman in the 1920s. She’s in this marriage for status and wealth… and then Jay Gatsby comes back into her life after five years.”
The script, penned by Kait Kerrigan, gives female characters more agency while remaining faithful to the original narrative. Since its release, Fitzgerald’s novel has sold over 30 million copies globally, and it has seen various adaptations, including Baz Luhrmann’s acclaimed 2013 film. The musical will continue performances at The London Coliseum until September 7, 2025, offering a modern reflection on timeless themes.
