Bob Dylan’s Original Paintings Exhibition Opens in London

Bob Dylan’s latest exhibition, Point Blank, opens at Halcyon Gallery in London on 9 May. It features 97 new works created between 2021 and 2022, showcasing vibrant scenes of everyday life. The exhibition is free and aims to engage viewers with its storytelling aspects. Dylan continues to evolve, highlighting his dual identity as a musician and visual artist.
After the acclaim for this year’s biopic, A Complete Unknown, Bob Dylan’s legacy is reaching a younger audience, showcasing not just his music but his artistry too. This May, London’s Halcyon Gallery is set to host an exhibition of Dylan’s original paintings, a side to the 83-year-old that perhaps many are unaware of.
The exhibition, titled Point Blank, features a stunning 97 new works. These are based on sketches done by Dylan between 2021 and 2022, presenting scenes of everyday life: musicians, couples, athletes, and the spaces where he has spent time. There’s a sense of vitality in the art, as Dylan’s brush reveals a vivid palette, transforming simple sketches into “living, breathing entities.” He cleverly uses colour to evoke mood and narrative.
Dylan remarked on his artistic approach, explaining, “The idea was not only to observe the human condition, but to throw myself into it with great urgency.” Each piece tells a story, whether it’s a reflection of lips, a saxophonist, or a cowboy silhouetted against a rising sun. Some of these works are a kaleidoscope of blue, red, and no-colour, echoing the aesthetic of Picasso’s blue period.
Point Blank isn’t just an art exhibit; it also stems from a book featuring prose to complement the imagery. Kate Brown, Halcyon’s creative director, says these artworks are like memories, “intangible windows into the life and imagination of one of the greatest storytellers.” She encourages viewers to engage with the narratives embedded within the paintings, noting how they provoke deeper thoughts about the people depicted.
Previously, Dylan’s work has been shown in Halcyon’s Drawn Blank series, which included graphite sketches from Dylan’s travels across Europe, Asia, and the US between 1989 and 1992. Dylan describes painting as a way to calm his restless mind during rigorous performance schedules.
Paul Green, Halcyon’s president and founder, expressed pride in the long-standing relationship with Dylan, noting it’s been an 18-year journey watching him transition into a prestigious visual artist. He added, “This latest body of paintings feels like a more intimate connection to the artist than in any of his previous work.”
Opening to the public on 9 May, this free exhibition is sure to draw in art lovers and music fans alike, eager to see another layer of Dylan’s multifaceted genius.
