A major exhibition on Gianni Versace will open in Bermondsey on July 16, showcasing over 450 pieces, including outfits worn by iconic celebrities. The retrospective, featuring designs from 1988 to 1997-98, will highlight Versace’s lasting impact on fashion and modern culture.
A significant exhibition spotlighting the renowned Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace is set to open in Bermondsey this summer. Dubbed the Gianni Versace Retrospective, it will start on July 16, marking nearly three decades since the designer’s untimely death.
This exhibition promises over 450 original pieces, showcasing outfits donned by notable personalities, including Princess Diana, Kate Moss, Sir Elton John, Naomi Campbell, and George Michael. It’s poised to be the largest collection of vintage Versace designs ever exhibited in the UK, honouring a designer whose impact on fashion remains profound.
The retrospective will present a vibrant timeline of Versace’s work, displaying looks from 21 of his collections, spanning Spring/Summer 1988 to Autumn/Winter 1997-98. Visitors can expect an engaging array of original runway footage, magazines, and photographs that illustrate the evolving aesthetics of the time.
Liz Koravos, Managing Director at Arches London Bridge, commented on the excitement surrounding the show: “As a genius of his time, it’s fascinating to see these incredible collections assembled under the curved arches of the venue. Gianni Versace ties to so much in modern culture and his legacy is enduring, a mark of a talented designer.”
The exhibition not only reflects on Versace’s dazzling era but also examines how the nostalgic allure of the ’90s continues to shape our understanding of identity, fame, and consumption today. With social media influencers and a rekindled interest in ’90s-style aesthetics, the themes of personal reinvention and opulence feel particularly timely.
Curator Karl von der Ahe from Dreamrealizer expressed the show’s importance, stating, “Bringing this retrospective to London feels especially meaningful. Gianni Versace’s bold, unapologetic vision revolutionised fashion, and this city—so rich in creativity and cultural influence—provides the perfect stage to celebrate his legacy. We’re thrilled to share these iconic pieces in one of the world’s fashion capitals.”
The Gianni Versace Retrospective in Bermondsey aims to celebrate the designer’s significant influence on the fashion industry. With over 450 pieces on display, including garments worn by well-known figures, it invites reflection on the enduring legacy of Versace’s unique style and its relevance today. The exhibition serves not just as a look back at the past but also as a lens through which we can understand contemporary fashion and culture.
