Wes Anderson’s artefacts to be displayed in a new exhibition at London’s Design Museum, starting 21 November. “Wes Anderson: The Archives” will showcase over 600 items including storyboards, props, and the Grand Budapest Hotel model. The exhibition, made in partnership with La Cinémathèque Française, celebrates his cinematic journey from “Bottle Rocket” to “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.”
Wes Anderson, the whimsical filmmaker known for his vibrant colour palettes and quirky characters, is getting a spotlight in London. Following last year’s viral Wes Anderson trend on TikTok, fans can now dive deeper into his creative universe, as hundreds of artefacts from his films will be showcased at the Design Museum. The exhibition, titled “Wes Anderson: The Archives,” opens on 21 November 2023.
Curated to be an extensive retrospective, the exhibition will display more than 600 items including original storyboards, polaroids, sketches, costumes, props, and even stop-motion puppets. The star attraction is expected to be a stunning candy-pink model of the Grand Budapest Hotel, which measures over three metres wide and was used in the 2014 film of the same name.
Visitors can look forward to a chronological journey through Anderson’s career, starting with his debut feature, “Bottle Rocket” (1996), which will be screened in full. It will also cover his latest Oscar-winning short, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” (2023). Other fascinating pieces include vending machines from “Asteroid City” (2023) and Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic FENDI coat from “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001).
Lucia Savi, the Design Museum’s Head of Curatorial and Interpretation, emphasises the deeply personal nature of each item, stating that they are not just props but integral pieces of art and design that animate Anderson’s unique worlds. This exhibition, made in collaboration with La Cinémathèque Française in Paris and with Anderson’s involvement, is a significant first for the director.
The exhibition is currently on view at La Cinémathèque Française until 27 July, before heading to London, where eager fans can immerse themselves in the meticulously crafted visuals of Anderson’s films.
