In a recent study conducted by the trade magazine The Grocer, Asda has emerged as the most budget-friendly major supermarket for premium Christmas food and drink items. The survey compared the prices of 33 festive products, such as turkey, pigs in blankets, and mince pies, across Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Waitrose.
The results revealed that Asda’s festive basket totalled £154.41, which was £19.48 cheaper than the average basket price at the other supermarkets. Asda also offered the lowest prices on 19 out of the 33 featured products, including smoked salmon slices, mince pies, pigs in blankets, Christmas cake, Baileys, and Lanson champagne.
Kris Comerford, Asda’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed satisfaction with the results and emphasised the supermarket’s commitment to maintaining product quality while keeping prices affordable. Comerford acknowledged the financial pressure faced by families during the holiday season and assured customers that they can enjoy high-quality festive food and drink without breaking the bank at Asda.
This year, Asda introduced 275 new festive product lines, many of which have received accolades in taste tests conducted by Good Housekeeping and BBC Good Food. Notable items include the Extra Special Norfolk Bronze turkey crown with pork, sage & caramelized onion, and the Extra Special Jewelled Topped Christmas Pudding.
The Grocer Magazine’s G33 premium festive basket comparison, published on 8th December 2023, provided the following pricing information:
