Empower Women in Ontario through Training and Support Program

2 min read

The Ontario government is currently seeking potential providers to offer training designed to support low-income women in developing their skills and acquiring valuable experience in various fields, including skilled trades, entrepreneurship, information technology, and general employment. This effort is a part of the Women’s Economic Security Program, which was initially established in 2018 with a fund of $5 million, and received an additional investment of $496,000 in 2023.

The program’s primary objective is to equip women with the essential skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to improve their employability, offering them the option to select one of four available streams for training. In addition, the government is providing extra assistance to participants to help eliminate obstacles to their participation, such as meals during training, transportation to and from the venue, and assistance in securing childcare services.

Acknowledging the difficulties encountered by many women, particularly those who have endured or are at risk of intimate partner violence, wraparound supports are also accessible. These supports include referrals to mental health and well-being services, counseling, housing assistance, and legal support. The aim is to create a supportive environment that allows women to pursue their chosen career paths and feel secure in their personal lives.

Charmaine Williams, the Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, has underscored the importance of the Women’s Economic Security Program in empowering women to enter the workforce and contribute to Ontario’s growth. In her statement, she emphasized the positive impact of supporting women in the workforce, particularly in high-demand sectors like skilled trades, promoting inclusive economic growth and empowerment for women and girls across the province.

Interested providers who wish to deliver the program have until January 26, 2024, to submit their proposals. Comprehensive information about the program and the application process can be found at Ontario.ca/getfunding. Aspiring female candidates interested in participating in the program can also visit Ontario.ca/women for additional details regarding the application process and eligibility criteria.

Since its inception, the Women’s Economic Security Program has contributed to the employment and entrepreneurship of over 2,100 women, in addition to supporting them in pursuing further education and training. It has also facilitated the launch of 1,298 small businesses and assisted 237 women in securing jobs in the skilled trades. These outcomes affirm the positive impact of the program on the lives and careers of women in Ontario, driving economic growth and fostering a more inclusive and diversified workforce.
