Elon University aims to revolutionize entrepreneurship and finance education through the collaborative efforts of Assistant Professor Drew Peabody and Alyssa Martina, Executive Director of the Doherty Center for Creativity, Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The goal is to position Elon as a trailblazer in providing a dynamic business education with the introduction of a new “Venture Capital Financing” course.
The development of this new course is not simply a regular project for the two faculty members; it is a concerted effort to cultivate a community of future business and finance leaders. Through their joint efforts, the course aims to bridge the gap between finance and entrepreneurship, equipping students with a comprehensive skill set to excell in the world of business.
The unique collaboration between Assistant Professor Drew Peabody and Alyssa Martina allowed for a well-rounded learning experience, providing students with insightful perspectives that draw from their diverse experiences. According to Ben Postell, a finance and business analytics major at Elon, the combination of Professor Peabody’s finance background and Professor Martina’s legal and entrepreneurial expertise brought real-world examples that enriched the learning process.
The idea for the course was born out of the observation made by Peabody and Martina during their coaching at the previous year’s Venture Capital Investment Competition. They noticed that other universities offeredupper-level venture capital finance courses and recognized Elon student interest in the subject. This prompted them to seek approval to collaborate in creating an academically rigorous course that emphasizes crucial venture financial and legal concepts for finance and entrepreneurship students.
A defining feature of the course is its multidisciplinary approach, immersing students in an exploration of strategy, management, entrepreneurship principles, finance, marketing, and law. This unique structure, combined with a team teaching approach, provides a comprehensive learning experience for students.
The course also featured guest speakers and hands-on exercises, offering diverse perspectives and practical experiences. Entrepreneurs with active startups presented to the students in real-time, providing invaluable insights. The impact of these real-world interactions was evident, with students expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn from professionals like C. Ashton Newhall ’98, a partner at StepStone Group Inc., and Shea Coakley ’07, a five-time founder specializing in ventures to improve happiness.
Students who have participated in the course have expressed enthusiasm about applying their knowledge in upcoming venture capital collegiate competitions. The support from administrators in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has been instrumental in the success of the course, and the faculty members are committed to reviewing student feedback to further enhance the learning experience in future semesters.
The introduction of the “Venture Capital Financing” course at Elon University represents a significant step towards redefining entrepreneurship and finance education. Through collaborative efforts and a multidisciplinary approach, Elon is shaping the next generation of business and finance leaders, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the competitive landscape of venture capital finance.
