NTT Limited, a global infrastructure and services company, has recently unveiled its key technology predictions for the year 2024. In light of the increasing adoption of AI and the constantly evolving technological environment, the company foresees several trends that will shape the future of networking, data centers, and cloud services.
Richard Hechle, the Managing Director of Dimension Data East Africa, emphasised the exponential growth in AI adoption as a precursor to a more technology-driven future. He underscored the pivotal role that humans will continue to play in the development and deployment of AI technologies, despite the advancements in Generative AI.

One of the anticipated trends for 2024 is the emergence of the concept of a ‘Dark NOC’ in the networking world. This concept encompasses the potential for a fully automated, lights-out Network Operations Center, propelled by advanced AIOps technology. Despite the automation, the importance of human talent in the success of such initiatives was emphasised, highlighting the need for upskilling and technological preparations.
Another prediction centres around the impact of AI on energy supplies for data centres, with an expected increase in power consumption in the coming years. Enterprises are projected to collaborate closely with energy providers to explore sustainable options to meet their net zero targets, while aligning with tightening data centre regulations.
Sustainability is also expected to play a significant role in the development and adoption of new tech solutions, with a growing emphasis on ESG initiatives and the integration of Private 5G networks for driving smart applications.
Optical networking is anticipated to gain traction, with a focus on efficiency, reliability, and future readiness. The pursuit of IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) aims to overcome the limitations of existing infrastructure and bring optical networking closer to the mainstream.
The combination of IoT, Private 5G, and edge computing is predicted to enhance organisations’ capabilities in gaining real-time insights and making informed decisions. The importance of edge capabilities is expected to grow, particularly in driving automation and digital transformation efforts.
