Leo Howell of Georgia Tech has been selected to serve as the interim vice president for Information Technology and chief information officer at the Institute, following the departure of Daren Hubbard to Princeton University. His new role is slated to begin on January 1, 2024.
Howell, who previously served as the chief information security officer, has played a key role in leading various initiatives to address cybersecurity risks at Georgia Tech. Shantay N. Bolton, the executive vice president for Administration and Finance and chief business officer, has expressed complete confidence in Howell’s ability to lead the team during this transitional phase.
Having joined Georgia Tech in October 2021, Howell reported directly to Hubbard in his previous role and was responsible for developing and implementing an Institute-wide information security and risk management program. As a senior member of the leadership team in the Office of Information Technology (OIT), he has overseen the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive cybersecurity program and led the cybersecurity team in managing the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Institute information assets.
Upon assuming his new role, Howell expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Institute’s instructional, research, and service missions.
As the search for the permanent vice president for Information Technology and chief information officer is ongoing, Georgia Tech has engaged the national executive search firm WittKieffer to assist with the process. Additional information regarding the search will be provided as it becomes available.
Howell’s appointment represents a significant milestone in Georgia Tech’s Information Technology and cybersecurity efforts, and we eagerly await the continued contributions and advancements under his leadership.
