Celebrating a Milestone: TRL Marks 90 Years of Transport Research

In December, the UK-based organisation TRL achieved a significant milestone as it celebrated 90 years of pioneering transport research. Since its establishment in 1933, TRL has been at the forefront of research aimed at enhancing the cost-effectiveness of highways, improving the efficiency and accessibility of transport systems, and enhancing the safety of all transport users.

The built environment is currently undergoing significant changes in response to urgent challenges such as climate change. New technologies are presenting transformative opportunities for the movement of people and goods, while the needs and desires of society continue to evolve. In order to remain relevant in this dynamic landscape, TRL has continually evolved, with each new generation of specialists enriching its unique domain expertise.

Earlier this month, the TRL team held an internal event to celebrate the nine-decade milestone. During the event, they recognised the contributions of TRL employees over the years by inviting the employee with the most seniority, David Gershkoff, as well as the newest addition to the team, Aditi Kamath, to cut a giant cake. David Gershkoff, a practice lead in pavement structural assessment, has been with TRL for an impressive 37 years, while Aditi Kamath, a graduate researcher in the Safety Services Team, has been part of the TRL family for three months.

Paul Campion, CEO of TRL, expressed his pride in the organisation, stating, “TRL is an amazing place to work; what we do has such far-reaching consequences. It’s a responsibility we take seriously, and to be at the helm for this anniversary is a privilege. It’s a rare thing for an organisation to have survived so long, remaining true to its original vision and mission. As we enter our tenth decade, TRL is proudly committed to shaping the future of transport through sustainable and accessible solutions, compiling the evidence to shape policy and deliver the benefits of innovation. As a social purpose enterprise, everything we do today is about making the world a better place for future generations.”

Originally established in 1933 as the UK government’s Road Research Laboratory, TRL was privatised in 1996 and now serves over 1,000 clients in numerous countries. Today, TRL is comprised of a team of expert scientists, engineers, and specialists who collaborate with their clients and partners to pave the way for the future of transport.

The TRL group of companies is owned by the Transport Research Foundation, a nonprofit-distributing social purpose company that enables its experts to provide independent advice without being influenced by shareholders or finance companies.

As TRL commemorates its 90th anniversary, it looks forward to continuing its legacy of influential research and innovation in the transport industry.
