In the contemporary world, the housing industry is in a state of constant evolution, prompting bricklayers to adjust to the changing landscape by integrating modern technologies. The emphasis on the adoption of innovative construction methods is regarded as pivotal in enhancing the quality of constructions and ensuring quality assurance.
The recent Lagos State Bricklayers Association (LSBA) annual general meeting, with the theme “Traditional Masonry Techniques and Advancing Building Technology”, featured housing experts who underscored the stark contrast between houses built using new technologies and those built using traditional methods. Kunle Awobodu, a former President of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), emphasized the necessity for bricklayers to enhance their skills through capacity development programs and embrace modern construction techniques.
Awobodu also urged young individuals to consider pursuing a career in bricklaying, portraying it as an essential trade that society relies on daily. He emphasized that bricklayers have the ability to transform the negative perception of their profession as a dirty job, and that undergoing bricklaying training offers a more honourable and lucrative alternative to engaging in illicit activities such as internet fraud.
Dr. Emmanuel Aladeloba, a former Head of the Building Department at Yaba College of Technology, commended Dangote Cement Plc for their dedication to training artisans, which he believes will bolster the capabilities of building professionals. He stressed the significance of honesty, transparency, and adherence to accurate measurements and materials in construction, cautioning against accepting low pay in exchange for involvement in substandard construction that could lead to potential collapse and loss of life.
Aladeloba also emphasized the importance of automation in site operations through new technologies, making construction processes more efficient and reliable. Additionally, he proposed the implementation of a pay grading system based on experience, to ensure that new entrants do not earn the same pay as experienced artisans.
During the meeting, LSBA President Taye Dauda expressed gratitude to Dangote Cement for their ongoing efforts in training and re-training its members. Dauda also pledged LSBA’s commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies to prevent building collapses and the associated loss of lives and property in Lagos State.
The call for bricklayers to embrace modern technology is a clear indication of the evolving nature of the construction industry. As technology continues to progress, it is crucial for professionals in the field to adapt and embrace new methods in order to meet the increasing demands for quality and durable construction. The emphasis on training and capacity development also underscores the importance of continually upgrading skills to meet industry standards and ensure the safety and integrity of building structures.
