The automotive industry in South Korea has experienced a tumultuous year in 2023. Despite overall record-breaking sales, individual companies have seen varying degrees of success. Hyundai, Kia, and GM Korea have demonstrated consistent growth, while KG Mobility and Renault Korea have struggled with disappointing sales.
According to the Korea Automobile Mobility Industry Association, the combined domestic sales and exports of the top five South Korean car companies reached an impressive 3,854,325 units from January to November, marking a 15.5% increase over the previous year. This figure represents the highest achievement in the association’s history, surpassing the record set in 2022.
Hyundai led the way with 1,746,255 units sold, closely followed by Kia with 1,483,108 units. Notably, the top ten best-selling passenger cars in South Korea were all from Hyundai and Kia.
GM Korea also experienced significant growth, with a 71.6% increase in sales to 417,853 units and an 83.2% rise in exports to 381,312 units. The company’s small SUV, the Trailblazer, emerged as the top export model with 194,838 units.
Conversely, KG Mobility suffered a 5.2% decline in domestic sales, selling 59,838 units. Despite the introduction of their first electric model, the Torres EVX, the company was unable to capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles. Similarly, Renault Korea faced challenges with its key models, the XM3 and QM6, resulting in significant decreases in both domestic and export sales.
These results illustrate the diverse landscape of the South Korean automotive industry, with some companies enjoying unprecedented success while others grapple with disappointing outcomes.
It is evident that the automotive industry in South Korea has experienced a year of highs and lows. As we approach the end of 2023, it will be fascinating to observe how these companies adapt and evolve in the ever-changing market.
