Dr. Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi, a Nigerian residing in Canada, has successfully raised N1,790,000 to support financially disadvantaged students in obtaining international passports. This initiative aims to assist students from low or middle-income households who aspire to pursue scholarships abroad but face financial barriers in obtaining essential documentation. The application process for the passport support fund commenced on January 1st and has garnered an impressive 2,899 applications.
The funds will be allocated to selected candidates who have achieved at least second-class upper division or upper credit for HND graduates. Despite the substantial number of applicants, the application window will not be extended.
In a similar development, Noel Ifeanyi Alumona, a Nigerian student currently studying in the USA, has allocated N3 million through his NGO, Boys Champions Foundation, to support start-up businesses in Nigeria. Alumona’s primary objective is to empower young Nigerians with entrepreneurial aspirations but do not have the necessary seed capital.
On the other hand, The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has advocated for a renewed focus on education and security in the country. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has issued a warning to government Ministries, Agencies, Embassies, and High Commissions regarding deceptive diaspora groups with hidden political agendas. They specifically highlighted Nigeria Diaspora Forum (NDF), which claimed to have established an office in Abuja for the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
NIDCOM has reaffirmed its position as the sole Commission, authorized by an act of Parliament, to oversee the well-being of Nigerians in the Diaspora and maintains a comprehensive database of all registered diaspora groups. The Commission has advised all governmental and diplomatic bodies to verify the status of such groups with NIDCOM.
