In Hungary, Toyota has experienced an unprecedented surge in sales, with a new Toyota vehicle being purchased every 30 minutes in the country last year. The car manufacturer saw a 15% increase in sales, with 75% of the models sold being either partially or fully electric. Additionally, Toyota’s premium brand, Lexus, saw a remarkable 47% increase in sales, with 99% of those vehicles being electric.
This surge in sales has solidified Toyota’s position as the leader in the Hungarian passenger car and light commercial vehicle market. The company reported a 38% lead in new car sales compared to their closest competitor. In the previous year, a record-breaking 17,300 new Toyotas and 1,100 Lexuses were sold in Hungary.
Toyota’s popularity extends beyond private buyers, as it has gained considerable traction among corporate buyers as well. In 2023, the brand accounted for a significant 19.5% share among private buyers and an 11.3% share among fleet buyers. This means that one in five private individuals opted for a Toyota, while one in nine new company cars was a Toyota.
With a diverse range of electric cars, including plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell electric cars, alongside the popular self-charging hybrid electric models, Toyota has rightfully claimed its spot as the most popular new car brand in the passenger car market with a 13.2% share. In the commercial vehicle market, it was the second most popular choice with a 14.8% share.
Hungarian car buyers have shown a preference for certain Toyota models such as the Corolla, Yaris Cross, Hilux, Yaris, C-HR, and RAV4, which is the world’s best-selling SUV.
Toyota has exciting plans for this year, with several new products set to hit the Hungarian market. The much-awaited battery-electric large SUV bZ4X will finally become available from stock this year. Additionally, the Yaris, GR Yaris, and Yaris Cross models will be updated, and new models such as the Camry, Land Cruiser, and Hilux with a hybrid electric drive will be launched. The Proace family of passenger and goods vehicles will be refreshed, and a new large-sized member will be added. The all-new C-HR is set to mark the biggest launch as the manufacturer promises a new battery-electric SUV in the Yaris Cross size class before the year concludes.
Lexus is also gearing up to increase its share of the Hungarian premium market with the launch of major new models, including the RZ large battery-electric SUV, UX self-charging hybrid electric and battery-electric SUV, the all-new LBX small crossover, and the LM luxury passenger van.
With such an upward trajectory in their sales and an array of exciting new models in the pipeline, it’s evident that Toyota remains a formidable force in the Hungarian automotive market.
