A pioneering development is currently underway as Topsoe’s state-of-the-art HydroFlex™ technology prepares to revolutionize the aviation industry. In accordance with the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Scenario, there is a critical requirement for over 10% of aviation fuel consumption to consist of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030 in order to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Startling statistics from the International Air Transport Association have revealed that global SAF production only represented a negligible 0.1% to 0.15% of total jet fuel demand in 2022. Nevertheless, with the implementation of Topsoe’s innovative technology at Preem’s Lysekil refinery in Sweden, a substantial transformation in the production of renewable fuels is on the horizon.
The HydroFlex™ technology will be integrated into Preem’s IsoCracker, a unit specifically designed to disintegrate complex molecules into lighter components. This collaboration between Topsoe and Preem is aimed at supporting Preem’s ambitious objective of generating five million cubic meters of renewable fuels and attaining a climate-neutral value chain by 2035.
By 2027, the revamped Lysekil refinery is poised to establish Preem as one of the leading SAF producers in Northern Europe. Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, has expressed her enthusiasm about this pivotal partnership, underscoring the imperative need for a substantial increase in renewable fuels within the aviation sector.
In strategic alignment with the surging demand for sustainable aviation fuels, Peter Abrahamsson, Director of Sustainable Development at Preem, has conveyed his delight regarding the refinery’s transformation. He has emphasized the remarkable impact of this investment, which stands as one of the most significant climate investments in Sweden, and has highlighted Preem’s commitment to transitioning from fossil to renewable production.
The collaboration between Topsoe and Preem has already yielded significant results in renewable fuels production, and both parties are fully committed to continuing this impactful work. Their unwavering dedication to enhancing renewable fuels production is a clear testament to their commitment to sustainability.
The integration of Topsoe’s innovative technology at Preem’s Lysekil refinery represents a monumental stride towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the aviation industry. This pioneering initiative serves as a prime example of the efforts being made to address the urgent need for sustainable aviation fuels, paving the way for a transformative shift in the transportation sector.
