Metacon has recently entered into an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) license and manufacturing agreement with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies to produce hydrogen generation systems using PERIC’s pressurised alkaline electrolysis stacks. Based in Sweden, Metacon is now considering the establishment of a factory in Sweden or another EU country with the capability to produce up to 500MW per year. This is equivalent to 50-100 complete electrolysis plants based on 5MW and 10MW electrolysis modules.
PERIC, a Chinese company, has developed a 5MW alkaline electrolysis module with over 10 years of operational data and a 10MW electrolysis module weighing just over 70 tonnes. Under the terms of the agreement, Metacon will have the ability to manufacture its own electrolysis plants under its own brand utilizing certain components from PERIC, including the stacks.
This development follows an agreement signed in November 2023, in which PERIC gained the right to manufacture and distribute Metacon’s reforming technology HHG systems in the Chinese market. These systems allow for the production of hydrogen from non-electric sources such as biogas, ethanol, and ammonia.
Christer Wikner, CEO and President of Metacon, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “With our own European production based on perhaps the world’s most proven large-scale electrolysis technology from PERIC, we also complement our portfolio of other solutions in catalytic reforming, resulting in a completely unique offering. If these plans are realized, the company will also be able to elevate to a different league in terms of size, financials, and sales.”
Yuguan Zhang, CEO of PERIC Hydrogen Technologies, added, “PERIC is currently the market leader in the largest Asian markets, such as China and India. Through this collaboration, we will be able to enter the European market more swiftly and with greater impact, tailored to local requirements and expectations.”
In addition to production, Metacon will continue to distribute PERIC’s electrolysis systems in the European market. The company is also exploring the possibility of securing financing through national and EU support programmes, as well as alternative forms of financing for the construction of the new manufacturing plant.
