The Value of WVU: A Recipe for Entrepreneurial Success

As a senior student majoring in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, I have acquired valuable lessons and insights that have influenced my journey towards establishing my business, Burton’s Bakery, after my graduation in May.

One of the pivotal lessons I’ve acquired during my tenure at WVU is the importance of cultivating relationships in the realm of entrepreneurship. Nurturing connections with clients has been priceless, enabling me to transform transactions into meaningful dialogues and follow-ups. This has not only cultivated a loyal customer base but also fostered a community of advocates. Some of my clients have even evolved into long-term companions, supporting me as I embark on this entrepreneurial path.

Another crucial lesson I’ve learned is the necessity of identifying and comprehending my target demographic. WVU has underscored the significance of not catering to everyone’s needs, but instead focusing on a specific target audience. This has enabled me to customize my products and services to meet the distinct needs and preferences of my customer base, laying the groundwork for success.

Furthermore, the pursuit of my passion has been a central theme of my WVU experience. Burton’s Bakery has been a vision of mine since the age of 12, and with the unwavering support from my educators and friends at WVU, I have been able to transform that vision into reality.

I have also been encouraged to seize every opportunity, no matter how insignificant it may appear. Whether it was class excursions, networking evenings, or career fairs, WVU has presented me with numerous opportunities that have been pivotal in my entrepreneurial journey. For instance, through the Hardy Family Hospitality and Tourism program, I had the opportunity to join the pastry division at Nemacolin, an experience that would not have been feasible without seizing such opportunities.

Moreover, mastering the art of sales has been emphasized as an invaluable life skill at WVU. Whether it is selling a product, an idea, or even oneself, the significance of honing the art of sales has been instilled in every facet of our lives.

WVU’s resources have also played a significant role in my entrepreneurial journey. The university provides a nurturing environment for aspiring entrepreneurs, offering industry experts, cutting-edge facilities, mentorship, networking events, and specialized programs. The Morris L. Hayhurst LaunchLab was one of the places that greatly contributed to my journey, where the staff encouraged me to start pitching Burton’s Bakery during my first year.

In conclusion, my time at WVU has been pivotal in my entrepreneurial journey. The support from family and friends, combined with the invaluable lessons and experiences gained at the university, have paved the way for the launch of Burton’s Bakery. I firmly believe that WVU has equipped me with the essential tools and knowledge to pursue my dreams and thrive in the realm of entrepreneurship. If there is one piece of advice I can impart, it would be to make the most of the time you have at WVU. It is an invaluable period that can shape your future in unimaginable ways.
