Renowned computer expert, Matthew Applegate of Suffolk, has made a bold prediction that artificial intelligence (AI) will take over the role of human coders within the next 10 years. As the founder of the Creative Computing Club, Applegate emphasises that he may be educating the last generation of human coders, as AI technology continues to advance at an unprecedented rate.
Established in 2012, the Creative Computing Club follows the guiding principle of “50% work 50% play,” aiming to make learning about coding fun and engaging for young people. Applegate foresees AI making its mark in various aspects of daily life, from producing pop music to writing, but he assures that professions such as plumbing will remain unaffected. Despite the potential challenges posed by AI’s growth, Applegate maintains an optimistic outlook, describing the world of technology as an “interesting ride.”
Notably, Applegate’s prognosis aligns with the recent report from the House of Lords committee, which asserts the importance of embracing the benefits of AI rather than fixating solely on the associated risks. The committee’s research focuses on large language models (LLMs), the technology that underpins generative AI tools like ChatGPT. These findings shed light on the significant impact that AI is poised to have on various industries, including coding.
In explaining the remarkable capabilities of AI, Applegate draws attention to the training process, revealing that AI was programmed using GitHub, an online repository housing a vast collection of exemplary and substandard code. This allowed AI to swiftly ascertain best coding practices, effectively circumventing many of the hurdles faced by human coders. Consequently, Applegate estimates that there is a mere decade left for traditional coding education to remain relevant before the inevitable rise of AI-dominated coding processes.
As the realm of technology continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly crucial to adapt to these transformative changes. With AI’s trajectory towards assuming a more significant role in coding and other fields, it is essential for individuals and industries to prepare for this paradigm shift. The insights shared by Applegate and the House of Lords committee underscore the pressing need for concerted efforts to understand, integrate, and harness the vast potential of AI.
