Director Lee Chang-hee has recently disclosed the incorporation of deepfake technology in the forthcoming Netflix K-drama, “A Killer Paradox”. The rationale behind the decision to employ this advanced technology was elucidated in a recent interview with Korea JoongAng Daily. Lee expounded on the use of deepfake technology specifically for scenes requiring the portrayal of the cast as their younger selves. He elucidated that Son Suk-ku’s character’s visage was reconstructed utilising a combination of a child actor and special effects, commonly referred to as deepfake, in order to heighten the production’s realism. Due to limited visual records of the actor’s formative years, image models were employed in the re-creation process. Despite the substantial investment required for the use of deepfake technology, the director emphasised the significance of upholding a sense of authenticity in the production. However, he also acknowledged that a consequence of incorporating the technology was the restricted dialogue in those childhood scenes.
Adapted from the webtoon of the same name by Kkomabi, “A Killer Paradox” chronicles the transformation of an unassuming university student into a serial killer. The narrative has garnered accolades, evident in the glowing four-star review from NME’s Rhian Daly, who lauded the K-drama for its deviation from conventional murder and retribution storylines. Daly also commended lead actor Choi Woo-shik for his exceptional portrayal of the unlikely avenger.
Furthermore, Netflix has unveiled a tantalising teaser for its upcoming Korean comedic series, “Chicken Nugget”, featuring Ryu Seung-ryong as the protagonist on a mission to rescue his daughter following a bizarre metamorphosis into a chicken nugget.
In summary, the integration of deepfake technology in “A Killer Paradox” underscores director Lee Chang-hee and the production team’s unwavering dedication to heightening the authenticity and realism of the K-drama. The series exhibits a promise of delivering a fresh and distinctive narrative, as reflected in its favourable reception and the anticipation surrounding its upcoming release on Netflix.
