A recent analysis has revealed the states with the healthiest and unhealthiest hearts in the US, considering 16 different factors. Surprisingly, the analysis unveiled that Colorado has the healthiest hearts, while Arkansas scored the lowest. The study found that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States.
Residents of Colorado are leading in heart health, with the state having the lowest obesity rates and being home to the most physically active individuals in the country. This is supported by data indicating the lowest number of high blood pressure cases and the least number of heart disease-related deaths in the state. All these factors contributed to Colorado receiving a perfect score of 100 in heart health based on the 16 factors, which included diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol use, and more.
On the other hand, Arkansas unfortunately scored the lowest in heart health, with a score of zero. This is mainly due to the high number of daily smokers and alarming obesity rates in the state. Heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the US, accounts for a significant number of fatalities, totaling 695,000 deaths annually and costing an estimated $240 billion.
The study delved into various health and lifestyle metrics such as diet, physical activity, smoking rates, and death rates from heart-related conditions, analyzing approximately 800 data points. It was revealed that states with healthier hearts also tended to have more physically active residents and lower rates of obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
Overall, Colorado took the top spot in heart health, scoring 100, followed closely by Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Utah, and Connecticut. On the other end of the spectrum, Arkansas was at the bottom with a score of zero, with Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, and West Virginia also ranking poorly in heart health.
It’s important to note that approximately half of Americans, approximately 127 million people, are affected by some form of cardiovascular disease. The risk factors for heart disease include obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and a family history of heart disease.
This study provides valuable insights into the factors influencing heart health across different states in the US, shedding light on the importance of lifestyle choices and their impact on cardiovascular well-being.
