The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) has given rise to a significant and intricate issue: deepfake pornography. This entails the fabrication of counterfeit videos, images, or audio using AI to emulate individuals, often in compromising scenarios that never transpired. It is a grave problem that has resulted in considerable distress and shame for numerous victims.
A 2019 study by Deep Trace revealed that an astounding 96% of deepfake videos had pornographic content. While the percentage may have shifted since then, the sheer volume of deepfake content, particularly of a pornographic nature, has continued to escalate. The accessibility of AI tools like Dall-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney has made it increasingly straightforward for individuals with limited technical expertise to produce deepfakes.
One of the most distressing aspects of deepfake pornography is the genuine trauma and humiliation experienced by the victims. Tragic instances such as that of a British teenager who took her own life after deepfake pornographic images of her were circulated online underscore the devastating impact of this issue.
Despite these challenges, there are promising tools and methods that can help shield one’s identity from AI manipulation. Digital watermarks, advocated by the Biden administration, aim to designate content as AI-generated, raising public awareness and simplifying the removal of deleterious counterfeit content from online platforms.
Both Google and Meta have announced intentions to commence labelling material created or altered by AI with a “digital credential” to provide greater transparency regarding the origins of content. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT and DALL-E, has also pledged to incorporate visual watermarks and concealed metadata to disclose the history of an image, in accordance with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standards.
In addition to detection methods, defensive tools that safeguard images from manipulation are being developed. Nightshade, devised by researchers at the University of Chicago, adds imperceptible signals to images. When processed through an AI-powered system, these signals produce a distorted version of the image, protecting it from unauthorized use.
It is also imperative for governments to play a role in combating deepfake pornography. Some states in the US have implemented legal protections for victims, while the Federal Communications Commission has prohibited AI-generated robocalls. In the UK, the Online Safety Act has criminalized the distribution of deepfake pornography, placing pressure on search engine providers, AI-tool developers, and social media platforms to curb the dissemination of AI-generated content.
However, legislative efforts face challenges, particularly pertaining to freedom of speech. Some argue that the private creation of deepfakes is akin to a personal fantasy and does not inflict harm if kept private. The debate surrounding this issue persists, but it is crucial to underscore the potential harm caused by creating and disseminating deepfake pornography in discouraging those engaging in such activities.
While there is no infallible solution to completely eradicate deepfake pornography, introducing obstacles in the creation and distribution of such content is indispensable. This necessitates collaborative efforts across various sectors, from technology companies to legislative bodies, to address the widespread and deleterious impact of deepfake pornography.
