Topsoe, a renowned global leader in sustainable technology, has recently unveiled a new engineering agreement with Approtium with the aim of converting low-carbon ammonia into hydrogen using its state-of-the-art technology.
The implementation of Topsoe’s groundbreaking ammonia cracking H2RETAKE™ technology is expected to facilitate the production of an impressive 75,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually. This pioneering facility, located in Ulsan, South Korea, is poised to play a crucial role in meeting the country’s ambitious targets for increasing co-firing in the power generation sector, with production scheduled to commence in 2027.
One of the key advantages of the H2RETAKE™ technology is its remarkable energy efficiency of 96%. This is achieved by using off-gases as fuel for the endothermic reaction, thereby significantly enhancing the overall efficiency when converting ammonia into high-purity hydrogen.
Elena Scaltritti, the Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, emphasized the company’s dedication to global environmental initiatives, affirming that Topsoe aims to make a substantial contribution to South Korea’s efforts to decarbonize.
James Kim, the CEO of Approtium, echoed similar sentiments, expressing their primary objective of providing clean hydrogen to clients and contributing to the acceleration of carbon neutrality in Korea.
In a broader context, an alliance formed between South Korea and Japan last year focused on constructing the hydrogen and ammonia supply chain. The agreement was designed to strengthen policy cooperation and promote the development and safety of the hydrogen industry.
Meanwhile, in the UK, AFC Energy has achieved significant progress in the field of sustainable energy by developing a modular ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker system. This innovative technology has the impressive capability of delivering 140 tonnes of fuel cell grade hydrogen annually.
AFC Energy has already commenced operations at a demonstration plant in the UK, with the produced hydrogen targeted for sale to their UK H-Power Generator deployments, including Speedy Hydrogen Solutions and third-party customers.
As the world continues to advance in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, these innovative partnerships and technological advancements are a testament to the collective commitment towards achieving a greener, more environmentally conscious future. With Topsoe and Approtium leading the way in converting low-carbon ammonia into hydrogen and AFC Energy contributing its modular cracker system, the future of clean hydrogen production looks promising and full of potential.
