The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle in Preventing Cardiometabolic Diseases in Children

In a recent symposium organized by the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), chairperson Piprim Basarah Yanuarso emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle from an early age to prevent cardiometabolic diseases in children. Yanuarso noted that diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke, which typically affect adults, are increasingly posing a threat to children. The association warned that these diseases can be perilous if not prevented early on.

Yanuarso highlighted that unhealthy lifestyle habits are the primary cause of cardiometabolic diseases in children. Therefore, the most effective approach to addressing this issue is through healthy behavior modification. He emphasized that lifestyle-related diseases cannot be cured with drugs and can only be overcome by making positive lifestyle changes. Hence, it is crucial to encourage children to adopt healthy practices early in life.

Moreover, adopting a healthy lifestyle from an early age has been identified as a preventive measure against cardiometabolic diseases. This includes engaging in physical activities, getting adequate sleep, consuming healthy foods, and increasing water intake. According to Yanuarso, preventive measures at an early stage are not only more cost-effective but also easier to implement. On the other hand, the cost of hospital treatment for these diseases is significantly higher, placing a burden on the state health insurer’s (BPJS’) ability to handle affected patients.

The IDAI chairperson also issued a warning that neglecting these diseases could endanger the health of future generations. Particularly in Indonesia, the risk of non-communicable diseases is increasing alongside the challenge of dealing with new infectious diseases. Anticipating and addressing these health challenges is crucial to maintaining a high quality of life.

It is clear that the focus on preventing cardiometabolic diseases in children through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle is of paramount importance. By promoting healthy habits from an early age, we empower children to lead healthier lives and reduce the risk of developing severe health conditions in their later years.

As members of society, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, it is vital to place increased emphasis on preventive measures and encouraging healthy lifestyle habits among our children. This not only enhances the overall well-being of our younger generation but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of our healthcare system and the overall quality of public health.
