BorgWarner’s Shift to Electric Vehicle Technology

Undertaken under the leadership of Harry Husted, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, with his Advanced Engineering team, BorgWarner is positioning itself at the forefront of the evolving automotive landscape.

In 2021, BorgWarner unveiled their “Charging Forward” strategy, with the objective of expanding their array of electric products while simultaneously maintaining a combustion portfolio optimized for reduced carbon emissions. The company has made substantial investments in electric vehicle (EV) technology and acquired charging infrastructure, signifying a significant foray into a new market segment for BorgWarner.

This transition to electric vehicle technology is a momentous step for BorgWarner, as it moves the company from involvement with vehicle engines to the sphere of cloud-based technology. Recognizing the escalating demand for fast chargers for EVs, BorgWarner discerned this as an opportunity to manage the end-to-end EV experience, from the driver’s seat to the charging mechanism.

This partnership culminated in the development of a cloud-based, connected charger solution, enabling BorgWarner to compile and analyze data from charging sessions to enhance the customer journey.

In a mere span of 10 weeks, BorgWarner and Deloitte successfully executed a cloud-native solution that facilitated the gathering of data from software-enabled chargers. This constitutes a momentous achievement for the company, and the growing enthusiasm for the project is evident from the increasing number of stakeholders participating in virtual demonstrations.

BorgWarner’s IT division, under the leadership of Chief Information Officer Ryan Talbott, played an indispensable role in establishing an environment conducive to supporting this new software-enabled business stream throughout the entire company. The collaborative efforts of Husted’s Advanced Engineering team and Talbott’s IT team have established a solid foundation for BorgWarner’s transition towards electric vehicle technology.
