The Rise of CO2 Pipeline Projects in the Midwest

In the ongoing battle for CO2 capture in the Midwest, two major pipeline projects, Navigator Heartland Greenway and Summit Carbon Solutions, have been competing for the opportunity to benefit from the 45Q PTC by targeting low capture cost CO2 emissions from ethanol fermentation. Unfortunately, with the cancellation of Navigator’s project in October 2022, Summit Carbon Solutions now has a unique opportunity to capitalize on stranded ethanol facilities from sequestration locations.

A recent report by Enverus Intelligence Research has quantified this opportunity by identifying facilities along Navigator’s proposed pipeline that also fall within Summit’s planned route. The analysis suggests that Summit could potentially increase the number of partnered ethanol facilities by 33% and boost captured CO2 by 40%. Additionally, with the addition of facilities from the recently announced Poet partnership, Summit’s project now has access to emissions amounting to 18.5 million metric tonnes per annum.

Despite these promising prospects, Summit will still need to overcome the same regulatory hurdles that led to the cancellation of Navigator’s project, leading to a planned in-service date for Summit in 2026.
