Financial Pressure and Mental Health: The Struggles of Digital Entrepreneurs

A recent study conducted by Wave, a prominent money management solution for small businesses, has illuminated the difficulties faced by digital entrepreneurs in the United States. The research surveyed over 1,000 business owners with fewer than ten employees who primarily engage with prospects and customers online. The findings revealed that a staggering 70% of digital entrepreneurs are grappling with financial and mental stress, with business finances cited as the primary source of pressure for over 75% of respondents.

A significant contributing factor to the mental health and stress levels of digital entrepreneurs is the state of their business finances, with 57% reporting it as a primary stressor. This is followed by personal and family issues (49%), and work-life balance (47%). The survey identified the difficulty in accessing funding as one of the major financial stressors, with 62% of business owners stating that they have been turned down for financial support. The study also highlighted systemic challenges in microbusinesses’ ability to secure grants and loans, with access to capital identified as a leading barrier to success.

The research further emphasised the impact of personal identity on the mental well-being of business owners, with 87% of respondents disclosing that their personal self-worth is closely tied to the success of their business. It is evident that the mental health of digital entrepreneurs is not only crucial for the success of their businesses, but also for their ability to positively contribute to the overall economy.

Moreover, the study shed light on the added burdens faced by working parents who are digital entrepreneurs. The research found that working parents experience higher stress levels, compounded by the challenge of qualifying for loans and banking products, thus impacting their perception of themselves as legitimate business owners.

Wave’s CEO, Zahir Khoja, stressed the need for corporations and communities to address the stressors faced by digital entrepreneurs by providing support in the form of grants, affordable technology, and financial literacy. He underlined the importance of fostering a healthier and more sustainable digital entrepreneur community to ensure the success and well-being of small business owners.

The research findings highlighted the financial strain experienced by the majority of digital entrepreneurs, with 75% expressing stress over their business finances. Additionally, concerns about the need to raise prices due to inflation have exacerbated the financial pressures faced by these entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, the study revealed the feelings of loneliness, pressure to succeed, and imposter syndrome experienced by digital entrepreneurs, with comparison to others and societal stereotypes contributing to self-doubt regarding their abilities and talents. Working parents, especially mothers, were identified as a group experiencing the highest levels of stress in relation to business finances, with 43% of working mothers reporting very or extremely high stress levels.

The research also indicated that the majority of digital entrepreneurs view artificial intelligence (AI) as an opportunity to improve their business, citing an increase in productivity and less time spent on manual tasks as the top contributing factors to their optimism.

The findings underscore the need for enhanced community support, access to funding, and technological empowerment for digital entrepreneurs. Wave’s one-stop money management platform has been at the forefront of empowering small businesses by providing purpose-built tools for solopreneurs, creators, and freelancers, as well as launching the Elevate Creatives Fund to support creative entrepreneurship through grant programs.

In conclusion, the study conducted by Researchscape on behalf of Wave highlights the critical need for greater attention and support for the mental health and well-being of digital entrepreneurs from both the business community and society at large.
