UNESCO’s Workshop on Cultural Heritage Tourism and Entrepreneurship

The UNESCO Transcultura program, designed to foster integration between Cuba, the Caribbean, and the European Union through culture and creativity, is currently seeking young entrepreneurs with a deep appreciation for Caribbean culture. These individuals are cordially invited to participate in the upcoming workshop entitled ‘Entrepreneurship and Cultural Heritage Tourism: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges in World Heritage Properties’, scheduled to take place from 23 to 25 April 2024 in Havana, Cuba.

This workshop is strategically planned to coincide with a significant event focused on ‘Coastal defense systems in Europe and the Caribbean’, where representatives from the management teams of European and Caribbean fortification sites inscribed in the World Heritage List will converge. Furthermore, delegates from authorities in the culture and tourism sector, as well as the private sector with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, will also be in attendance.

The primary objective of this gathering is to leverage the expertise of site managers and the entrepreneurial talents of young cultural creatives to ensure the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of World Heritage Properties, while simultaneously fostering economic opportunities for local communities.

The workshop aims to achieve specific goals, including facilitating the exchange of knowledge and best practices between experienced site managers and young entrepreneurs, identifying and developing successful entrepreneurial ventures at World Heritage Properties, integrating innovative approaches into the management and promotion of these properties, and fostering collaboration and networking to create partnerships between site managers and young entrepreneurs that benefit both the preservation of the properties and the economic growth of surrounding communities.

The 3-day workshop will feature case presentations, round tables, thematic panels, discussion groups, site visits, and matchmaking sessions. Discussions will occur at two main levels: between entrepreneurs from or near World Heritage Properties to highlight regional challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurship, and between these entrepreneurs and experienced site managers to develop synergies and strategic alliances for the preservation of culture and heritage, sustainable business practices, and the enhancement of cultural tourism.

Young entrepreneurs interested in this initiative will be pleased to know that UNESCO Transcultura will cover all expenses, including round-trip economy class flights, arrival and departure transfers, Cuban visa fees if necessary, accommodation in a 3-star hotel or similar, three meals per day, and daily transportation for workshop-related activities from 22 to 26 April 2024 (4 nights).

The application deadline for this unique opportunity is Friday 8 March 2024, at 23:59 Cuba time. This workshop presents an invaluable opportunity to blend business acumen with cultural tourism, and interested applicants are encouraged to meticulously review the details and submit their applications.
