Given the increasing popularity of gaming, especially among young people and adults, there is a growing concern for the impact of prolonged headphone use on hearing health.
The study also indicates that sounds at or above 70 dB are considered unsafe, with louder noises above 120 dB posing immediate harm to the ears. This has led to concerns about the potential long-term effects of frequent exposure to loud sound levels, especially in young individuals.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 430 million people worldwide require rehabilitation for hearing loss, with 34 million children in need of assistance. The prevalence of hearing loss increases with age, and it is anticipated that by 2050, over 700 million people worldwide will have disabling hearing loss.
Despite the concerning statistics, Dr. Shama Kovale, a consultant at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, highlights that the habit of using headphones has significantly contributed to the rise in hearing-related issues, particularly earaches and minor headaches. This, she adds, is a concern that affects people of all genders and is even more prevalent among those who constantly use Bluetooth headphones or earphones.
Recognising the importance of seeking medical help, Dr. Shikha Sharma, head of the ENT department at Yatharth Hospital in Noida Extension, underscores the need to be mindful of subtle signs such as difficulty understanding speech, recurrently asking for repetitions, and experiencing ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears.
To address and prevent further complications, hearing specialists have recommended various safe listening habits. These include using noise-cancelling headphones, maintaining moderate volume levels, taking regular breaks to rest the ears, and using hearing protection at loud events. Additionally, it is essential to educate children and young adults about the potential risks and encourage the use of hearing protection devices when necessary.
