The Rise of In-cell Touch TFT LCD Displays in Automotive Central Stack Displays

According to research conducted by Omdia, the popularity of in-cell touch TFT LCD displays is steadily increasing, with shipments expected to reach 26.2 million in 2023 and a 35.1% share of total shipments. By 2025, this figure is projected to exceed 50%, establishing their dominance in automotive central stack displays (CSD). Panel makers have been aggressively promoting in-cell touch TFT LCD displays to customers due to their technical advantages, integration simplicity, and increasing display ASPs.

The increasing popularity of in-cell touch TFT LCD displays is evident in their 55.2% shipment share in smartphone applications and 45.1% in tablet PC applications in 2023. In the automotive sector, touch display shipments, primarily for CSDs, have been on the rise, with shipment shares increasing from 11.7% in 2021 to 35.1% in 2023, posing a threat to the survival of projected capacitive touch makers.

Projected capacitive touch displays, which held an 86% shipment share in 2021, are facing stiff competition from in-cell touch TFT LCD displays. The growth of in-cell touch TFT LCD displays is driven by various factors including sufficient display sources, supply chain simplification, panel makers’ capital or business scale, and the emerging smart cabin trend in automotive applications.

The demand for larger automotive central stack displays has also contributed to the increase in in-cell touch TFT LCD display shipments. Display sizes larger than 10 inches accounted for 37% of all touch display shipments in 2021, growing to 58.5% in 2023, with the majority of in-cell touch TFT LCD displays shipped being larger than 10 inches, capturing a 95.7% share of all in-cell touch TFT LCD display shipments in 2023.

Calvin Hsieh, Omdia’s Senior Research Manager for Displays, anticipates that in-cell TFT LCD display shipments will exceed a 50% share in 2025, despite slower growth in 2024. The growing significance of automotive applications is evident in the overall touch display shipments for automotive applications, which reached 74.6 million in 2023.

In light of these developments, senior professionals from the display, consumer electronics, and semiconductor industries will convene at the Taiwan Technology Conference from April 17-18, 2024, in Taipei, Taiwan. Calvin Hsieh is set to present Omdia’s latest displays research at this highly anticipated event.
