BEWI, a leading company in the sustainable packaging, components, and insulation solutions industry, has taken a significant step towards sustainable manufacturing by increasing the recycled content in EPP (expanded polypropylene) automotive and HVAC components at its manufacturing facilities in Skara and Värnamo, Sweden. This move is in line with the ambitious sustainability goals of automotive manufacturers, as well as BEWI’s own aspirations to transition to a circular economy, which involves increasing its use of recycled or non-fossil raw materials.
Fredrik Johansson, the Operations Director of BEWI Automotive, explains that “Increasing the recycled content in EPP components from 25 to 30 per cent results in a 16 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the use of conventional material. This improvement highlights BEWI’s efforts to offer products with a lower carbon footprint, thereby assisting our customers in achieving their climate reduction targets.”
EPP components play a crucial role in the automotive industry, particularly in the context of electric vehicles that require lightweight and insulating components. BEWI’s EPP solutions are used in a variety of automotive parts, such as shock absorbers and interior components, contributing to the production of lighter vehicles, and therefore, a reduction in emissions and an increase in driving range.
In addition to their importance in the automotive sector, EPP components are also significant in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, where they enhance insulation, efficiency, and the lifespan of equipment.
Johansson also states, “The adaptability and recyclability of EPP make it a preferred choice for various applications, aligning with BEWI’s commitment to sustainable solutions.”
