Norway’s Green Ships Invest is pleased to announce its collaboration with U.S.-based startup Amogy to develop cutting-edge ammonia-powered dual-fuel electric Platform Supply Vessels (PSV). This marks a significant step forward in the quest to create sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping solutions.
As a company initially established as a consultancy, Green Ships Invest has been diligently working with various industry players including shipowners, shipyards, and financial institutions to lead the way in developing greener shipping practices. Their ambitious projects span a wide range of vessel types, from offshore vessels and fast ferries to specialized vessels such as drill ships and cruise ships.
The forthcoming ammonia-powered PSVs will incorporate Amogy’s innovative 200 kW ammonia-to-electric power systems, demonstrating a clear commitment to harnessing cutting-edge technology. These vessels, expected to be 4,000 dwt and 269 feet (82 meters) in length, will be equipped with 2 MW of energy capacity. The original plan to develop hybrid diesel-electric ships has now evolved to use ammonia as the primary source of energy, with conventional diesel generators as a backup.
Christian Berg, Managing Director of Amogy, praised the new partnership as a decisive milestone in the company’s efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the maritime industry. Backed by investors including Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, Temasek, and Mitsubishi, Amogy is at the forefront of pioneering sustainable solutions for the shipping sector. Their ongoing project to convert an old tugboat to demonstrate the capabilities of ammonia-to-electricity technology is a testament to their commitment to innovation.
While a timeline for the project has not been disclosed, Green Ships Invest and Amogy have announced their intention for Bourbon Horizon to operate the completed ammonia-powered electric PSV. With a partnership already established with Canadian offshore specialist Horizon Maritime Services, Bourbon Horizon is set to play a pivotal role in the deployment of these cutting-edge vessels.
Amogy has identified the global PSV fleet as a prime market for its technology, particularly due to the advanced age of most vessels in operation. Green Ships Invest, devoted to driving the energy transition within the industry, views these ammonia-powered PSVs as a crucial step towards aligning the sector with evolving environmental regulations, setting a new standard for the entire industry.
Looking ahead, the second phase of the agreement between Green Ships Invest and Amogy involves the addition of two more vessels utilizing Amogy’s state-of-the-art technology. This signals a promising future for the integration of sustainable solutions in the maritime industry, paving the way for a greener and more efficient shipping ecosystem.
