This week, educators in Jersey have been afforded the opportunity to immerse themselves in the realm of artificial intelligence and its capacity to revolutionize the manner in which they strategize lessons and assess students’ work.
Conducted by Digital Jersey in partnership with Skills Jersey and the Children, Young People, Education and Skills Department, these events marked a pioneering effort tailored specifically for local teachers. The objective was to examine the various possibilities and challenges of integrating AI into the educational environment in a conscientious and efficient manner.
The workshops centred on demonstrating how AI could streamline time-intensive tasks such as lesson planning and grading, thereby enabling teachers to dedicate more attention to the higher-value aspects of education. Moreover, educators were instructed on guiding students in the ethical and responsible use of AI tools, while also shedding light on the potential risks and limitations of this technology.
The enlightening sessions were spearheaded by distinguished figures in the field – Rory Steel, the head of the Digital Jersey Academy, and Vincent Sider, an AI marketing expert and Digital Jersey ambassador. According to Mr. Steel, while AI presents numerous benefits in the educational landscape, it is crucial that its implementation is approached adeptly, with full acknowledgement of the associated risks and ethical considerations.
“Jersey has started to observe the integration of AI in schools, however, the level of usage varies,” he stated. “The primary objective of these sessions was to furnish teachers, who are known to have limited time, with a sturdy foundation to explore how AI can enhance their work and enrich the learning experience for students, presenting them with practical steps to commence this process.”
Digital Jersey, an economic development agency and industry association bolstered by government funding, has been at the vanguard of initiatives aimed at cultivating the digital sector.
