Empowering Ghanaian and Senegalese Entrepreneurs: African Development Bank’s Initiative for Green Jobs

2 min read

The African Development Bank has recently given its approval for a grant of $999,000 to back the Strengthening Women, Youth and People with Disabilities’ Micro-Entrepreneurship for Green Jobs (MicroGREEN) project in Ghana and Senegal. The objective of the project is to generate as many as 500 green job openings in natural resource sectors like agroforestry, fisheries and biodiversity for marginalized groups such as women, youth, and people with disabilities.

Throughout a span of two years, the project will furnish entrepreneurship training and business skills to a minimum of 1,000 youth, with a specific emphasis on female youth (60%), individuals with disabilities/special needs (10%), and other young individuals (30%). By making use of market access, skills development, and access to finance, the project strives to encourage sustainable business expansion and job generation in the two nations. The project will be executed by Invest in Africa, a non-profit organization committed to supporting African SME growth.

The Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Multi-Donor Trust Fund was founded by the African Development Bank in 2017 to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship and to generate long-lasting and sustainable jobs for youth on the continent. The trust fund endorses the Bank’s Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy, which seeks to produce 25 million jobs and equip 50 million youth with employable and entrepreneurial skills by the year 2025.

This initiative is in line with the Bank’s pledge to economic development and social advancement in its 54 regional member states throughout the continent. With the objective of promoting all-encompassing economic growth, the MicroGREEN project is positioned to have a substantial impact by empowering entrepreneurs and creating opportunities in the natural resource sectors of Ghana and Senegal.
