The Family Care Trust, a non-profit organization located in Solihull, has been nominated for the esteemed Disability Smart Technology Award 2024, competing alongside global technology giants Microsoft and Haleon. This prestigious award, presented by the Business Disability Forum, acknowledges innovative technology that enhances the lives of individuals with disabilities.
The charity’s nomination is a result of their virtual farm project, which was developed at their Newlands Bishop Farm site utilizing the popular video game, Minecraft. This groundbreaking project seeks to provide opportunities for 120 adults with mental health conditions and learning disabilities to participate in work-based learning. Participants engage in a diverse range of activities including crafts, horticulture, woodworking, and animal husbandry. Notably, the farm is currently welcoming adorable new lambs.
What differentiates this project is the virtual farm component, enabling individuals to familiarize themselves with the farm before their visits. This virtual tour serves to alleviate any apprehension that some individuals may have about being in unfamiliar environments. It also offers insights into the activities and support available to participants during their time at the farm.
Jon Watts, a representative from The Family Care Trust, emphasized the positive impact of the virtual farm project, noting that it has significantly aided new Project Workers. Additionally, the involvement of project workers in the development of the project underscores the collaborative nature of this innovative initiative.
The winners of the Disability Smart Awards will be revealed at an awards ceremony scheduled for April 30. Danny Adams, Chief Executive of The Family Care Trust, conveyed the excitement and pride felt by everyone associated with the charity upon learning of the nomination. Adams stressed the project’s goal of enhancing the lives of vulnerable adults as a key component of the nomination.
It is indeed remarkable to witness a local charity like The Family Care Trust competing at a global level with industry leaders such as Microsoft and Haleon. The recognition of the virtual farm project for its innovative use of technology to support individuals with disabilities speaks volumes about the dedication and creativity of the charity’s team.
As we eagerly await the announcement of the Disability Smart Technology Award 2024 winners, it is important to acknowledge the significance of this nomination.
