Texas Instruments, a key player in the technology industry renowned for its computers and semiconductors, has left an indelible mark not only on the world of business but also on the film industry. The company’s pioneering technology, known as Digital Light Projection (DLP), has played a crucial role in reshaping the way films are viewed.

Conceived 25 years ago, DLP technology has revolutionized the movie-watching experience by significantly enhancing the quality of projected images. At the heart of this innovation is the Digital Micromirror Device (DMD), a small chip embedded with minuscule mirrors. When light is projected onto the chip, it reflects sharper and brighter images, effectively moving the film industry from traditional film to a digital format.

What was once hailed as a groundbreaking technological advancement has now become an integral part of the global cinema landscape, with nine out of every 10 movie theaters across the world employing Texas Instruments DLP Cinema. According to DLP Cinema Senior Assistant Architect Tim Ryan, the very first digitally projected movie using this technology was “Star Wars Episode 1” in 1999, marking a significant milestone in the movie industry’s transition towards digitalization.

Jeffrey Marsh, DLP Products Business Manager and Vice President of Texas Instruments, underscored the transformative impact of the DLP technology on the quality of the movie-watching environment. He highlighted the vivid colours and crisp images that became synonymous with the technology, asserting that the “magic is in the mirrors.”

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this revolutionary technology, employees at Texas Instruments convened at a local theatre on the company’s campus. The celebration included a costume contest, where participants dressed up as their favourite movie characters, adding a touch of fun and creativity to the event.

Product & Test Manager Griselda Hermosillo, dressed as ‘Rey’ from Star Wars, expressed jubilation at the milestone, stating, “We’re celebrating 25 years of magic for our cinema technology.” This event not only showcased the technological prowess and innovation of Texas Instruments but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and celebration among its employees.

The impact of Texas Instruments’ DLP technology extends beyond just its business success; it has fundamentally transformed the global film industry, paving the way for a new era of digital cinema. As the company commemorates the 25th anniversary of this technology, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of innovation and excellence that continues to define Texas Instruments.
