Creative Expression: An Artist’s Journey on a Lifestyle Block

Angela McKenzie, a mixed media artist from Otamarakau, near Pukehina Beach, has become adept at balancing her passion for art with the upkeep of her family’s lifestyle block. Her works, characterized by the exploration of textures, shapes, and colours, have gained recognition within the art community.

McKenzie’s journey as an artist commenced in 1998 when she participated in a watercolour night class with Paengaroa artist Lois Isaacs. This experience sparked her love for art and motivated her to pursue formal education in the field. Subsequently, she completed her Diploma in Visual Art in 2008, followed by a Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Art and Design at Waiariki Institute of Technology. She then obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2011.

“I never envisioned reaching this level, but that is precisely what transpired,” she shared with a smile. “Hence, I have continued to paint. I spent a few years working in the creative industry, but eventually, I realized that what I truly aspire to do is to continue creating. It is not just about painting, but creating.”

Her commitment and talent have been acknowledged through numerous accolades, including the esteemed Best in Show at the Lifestyles of the Bay Art Award. McKenzie’s artistic process is intricate, commencing with colour combinations and evolving into a multi-layered creation, often influenced by the inspiration of music. As she engages with each piece, she allows herself to be moved by the storytelling quality of the songs she listens to, frequently incorporating lyrics into her art.

Her creations not only encapsulate her personal encounters but also convey reflections on societal phenomena, particularly the influence of social media on the human experience. She delves into the malleability of memory and its evolution over time, infusing depth and significance into her artistic endeavors.

In her home studio, Angela McKenzie immerses herself in the artistic process, juggling multiple projects at various stages of development. Her devotion to her craft is apparent as she meticulously navigates through each stage of creation, unveiling the revelations that each piece brings.

In addition to her art, Angela McKenzie tends to a one-acre country garden on the lifestyle block that she shares with her husband, Clive Armstrong, who is also an artist. The property, which holds sentimental value as part of her family’s farming legacy, provides her with the opportunity to engage with visitors and exhibit her work in a distinctive setting. Embracing the tranquility of her environment, she feels privileged to have the chance to work from home and share her art and garden with others.

It is evident that Angela McKenzie’s artistic journey embodies resilience, creativity, and a profound reverence for the natural world, all of which are manifested in her captivating and thought-provoking creations. Her unique synergy of art and nature serves as an inspiration to artists and enthusiasts, showcasing the beauty that can emerge from the fusion of diverse forms of creativity.
