A Day in the Life of a Beverage Industry Apprentice: Ethan O’Brien Shares His Story

Ethan O’Brien, a 20-year-old apprentice at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, did not always envision himself working in the food and drink industry. In his youth, he aspired to a career in football, but a career-ending injury at 16 prompted him to consider alternative paths. Despite not having a specific occupation in mind, Ethan harboured ambitions of advancing within a corporate entity and eventually establishing his own business.

The question arises as to why he gravitated towards the food and drink industry. Ethan acknowledges that his foray into the sector was somewhat fortuitous, but he acknowledged its dependability in catering to a fundamental human need. Furthermore, the industry’s resilience, particularly during economic downturns, captivated his interest. “The opportunities are limitless, provided one puts in the necessary effort, with rewards to naturally ensue,” Ethan asserts.

In his capacity as a Sales and Activation Alcohol Ready to Drink (ARTD) apprentice, Ethan is charged with overseeing the activation of CCEP’s alcoholic beverages range, which involves organizing events and creating alluring displays in stores. Characterising his daily routine as dynamic and fast-paced, Ethan finds pleasure in the varied nature of his work, where no two days are identical. Whether coordinating taste tests for a major event or assisting with the installation of a fridge, Ethan finds the role to be exhilarating.

Upon being asked about his application process, Ethan details the rigorous selection stages, consisting of submitting his CV, participating in an online interview, attending an assessment centre with group tasks and challenges, and culminating in a final interview. Reflecting on the most gratifying aspect of working in the food and drink industry, Ethan derives contentment from being a part of such a prominent sector and representing a household name like Coca-Cola.

Addressing misconceptions about the industry, Ethan dispels the notion that it primarily comprises factory work with limited job prospects. He underscores the abundant career opportunities within CCEP and across the broader industry, emphasising the diverse roles and possibilities on offer.

Ethan’s advice to young individuals aspiring to enter the food and drink industry is straightforward—simply pursue it. “It’s such a tremendous industry to be a part of,” he enthuses.
