Supporting Young Entrepreneurs in Northumberland: Apply for Micro Grants Now

In Northumberland County, young aspiring business owners have the opportunity to realise their entrepreneurial aspirations this summer. The Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland (BECN) is extending an invitation to innovative and creative young minds to participate in the “My Future My Career” children’s entrepreneurship programme.

Available to children and youths aged eight to 14, this complimentary programme offers the chance to launch or expand their own business ventures during the summer break. Participants will not only receive valuable business guidance, but also have the opportunity to receive a small micro grant of up to £500 to assist with their business expenses.

Since its inception in 2021, the My Future My Career programme has supported 32 young individuals in embarking on their entrepreneurial journey. Kailyn Coupland, the business development co-ordinator for Northumberland County, emphasised the programme’s impact on young entrepreneurs, highlighting the free support it provides to help them initiate their businesses.

As part of the programme, children will also have the opportunity to exhibit their businesses at the annual youth entrepreneurship showcase, hosted by Staples in Cobourg. This event provides a platform for young entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services, offering valuable exposure and the opportunity to garner support from the local community.

The BECN is dedicated to providing comprehensive support for small businesses in Northumberland, offering resources, education, networking opportunities, and micro grant funding to help them succeed. This includes their various student-based programmes and partnerships with schools throughout the community.

To apply for the My Future My Career children’s entrepreneurship programme, interested parties must complete an online application by June 18 at northumberland.ca/en/becn/kids-business-start-up-program.aspx. Successful applicants will be notified by June 21, although it is important to note that not all applicants will receive a micro grant due to the competitive nature of the process and the availability of funds.

The microgrant is designed to assist with covering costs such as marketing, supplies, and equipment, providing essential support for the young entrepreneurs’ business ventures. Additionally, the programme aims to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit among children, preparing them for potential future participation in programmes such as the Summer Company.

Overall, the My Future My Career programme presents an exceptional opportunity for children to commence their entrepreneurial journey and gain the confidence to pursue their own business ventures. By providing essential support and resources, the programme enables young aspiring entrepreneurs to take their first steps towards business ownership.

In partnership with the provincial government, the BECN is committed to equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the world of business. Therefore, if you know a young entrepreneur with big dreams, be sure to encourage them to seize this outstanding opportunity and apply for the My Future My Career programme today.
