Revolutionary ISOTERRA Technology from Chevron Lummus Global Chosen for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Project in China

Chevron Lummus Global LLC (CLG) announced a significant development on June 12, 2024, revealing the selection of its groundbreaking ISOTERRA technology for a pioneering Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiative in China. This milestone project will involve CLG providing the technology license, engineering services, and specialized equipment and catalysts for a state-of-the-art facility.

Regarding this collaboration, Rajesh Samarth, Chief Executive Officer of Chevron Lummus Global, expressed his pride in contributing to China’s sustainability objectives with the renowned ISOTERRA technology. Drawing on over 12 years of expertise in lipids hydrotreating and isomerization catalysts, the company is confident in the ability of ISOTERRA technology to deliver exceptional outcomes for this project and the wider region.

The newly established renewable fuels plant is expected to operate at a capacity of 400 thousand metric tons per annum (KTA), processing various lipid feedstocks to optimize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. Moreover, the facility is equipped to produce renewable diesel, demonstrating its operational flexibility.

The initiative is anticipated to position the operator as a leading sustainable aviation fuel producer in the region, aligning with China’s objectives to reduce emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

In order to address the challenges associated with renewable feedstocks and optimize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) output, the ISOTERRA unit will utilize a unique two-stage process. This approach harnesses advanced EnRich® hydrotreating and EnHance™ isomerization catalysts, drawing on Chevron Lummus Global’s extensive experience in hydroprocessing.

Additionally, CLG’s innovative ISOTERRA process utilizes all-hydroprocessing techniques to optimize the production of ASTM-approved renewable diesel or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This two-step method begins with hydrodeoxygenation of the feed, followed by isomerization to achieve final cold flow property requirements, using CLG’s acclaimed fifth-generation EnHanceTM catalyst. The ISOTERRA process is also adaptable for upgrading existing hydrotreaters for renewable applications, offering flexibility for installation in both single and dual reactor setups.

Chevron Lummus Global (CLG) is a leading provider of advanced technologies for producing renewable and conventional transportation fuels, high-quality base oils, and sustainable petrochemicals from diverse feedstocks. Utilizing state-of-the-art catalysts and innovative reactor internals, CLG’s solutions are engineered to enhance efficiency and flexibility, reduce emissions, and maximize economic benefits.

Established in 1907 by Walter E. Lummus, Lummus Technology initially focused on developing process technologies for producing transportation fuels from bio-based feedstocks. Today, the company continues to drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.

In conclusion, the selection of ISOTERRA technology from Chevron Lummus Global for the SAF initiative in China represents a significant advancement in the production of sustainable aviation fuel, supporting the country’s ambitious environmental goals. With CLG’s expertise and pioneering technology, this project signifies a crucial step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly aviation industry.
