The Ascendancy of AMOLED Technology in the Smartphone Market

The most recent Smartphone Display Market Tracker from Omdia has projected that AMOLED technology is set to exceed TFT LCD shipments by 2024. This forecast comes as the smartphone display market sees a notable recovery, driven by increased outdoor and travel activities following the complete lifting of COVID-19 control measures in the second quarter of 2023.

In 2023, annual smartphone display shipments reached 1.45 billion units, indicating a 5% year-on-year increase from 2022. This upward trend is expected to continue, with shipments in the first half of 2024 projected to reach 715 million units, a 9% year-on-year rise from the first half of 2023.

Omdia’s 1Q 2024 actual shipment data reveals that AMOLED shipments surged to 182 million units, marking a 39% year-on-year increase, while TFT LCD shipments declined to 172 million units, a 10% year-on-year drop. This marks the first time that AMOLED shipments have surpassed TFT LCD shipments on a quarterly basis.

In the short term, Omdia predicts that AMOLED will make up 53% of smartphone display shipments in the second quarter of 2024 and is expected to expand to 56% in the third quarter of 2024, surpassing a 50% market share. The highly-anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 in the fourth quarter of 2024 is projected to notably elevate AMOLED shipments, solidifying AMOLED’s dominance throughout the entirety of the year. Consequently, AMOLED technology is scheduled to lead the smartphone display market in shipments from 2024 onwards.

These findings highlight the significant transition towards AMOLED technology in the smartphone market, reflecting the industry’s increasing dependence on this advanced display technology. As consumer demand for enhanced visual experiences continues to grow, the widespread adoption of AMOLED displays is poised to reshape the landscape of the smartphone industry in the years to come.
