A youthful couple has been given a four-year prison sentence for orchestrating an elaborate benefit fraud scheme that resulted in them diverting £720,000 of taxpayers’ money to maintain their extravagant lifestyle.

Wiktoria Packowska and Wojciech Kowalski, both 28 and hailing from Poland, were found guilty of fabricating false bank accounts, identity documents, and utility bills to make more than 80 fraudulent benefit claims over a three-year period. Their deceit caught up with them in 2020 when they were apprehended by law enforcement while attempting to escape the country via the Channel Tunnel, carrying over £60,000 in cash.

The court’s recorder, Daniel Stevenson, issued a scathing reprimand to the unashamed couple, reminding them that every hardworking taxpayer in the country had become a victim of their deceptive activities.

Prosecutors disclosed that the police came across a wealth of incriminating evidence in the couple’s residences in East London, including forged identity cards, stacks of mobile phones, an assortment of bank cards, and a plethora of fraudulent documents.

During their sentencing, it was revealed that Packowska even dared to flaunt a £12,500 Rolex watch during her second arrest, indicating the couple’s shameless display of their illegally obtained wealth.

Packowska and Kowalski confessed to two counts each of conspiracy to commit fraud, as well as possession of articles for use in fraud, and criminal property related to the recovered cash. The couple’s claim that they were under duress from others involved in the scam was dismissed by the court.

The judge, Recorder Stevenson, emphasized that the actual loss to the public purse could have been significantly higher if the couple’s criminal operation had not been exposed. He further asserted that their relentless pursuit of illegal financial gain was a clear abuse of the welfare support system.

In light of the staggering revelations, confiscation proceedings will be initiated to recover the stolen money from the couple. Detective Constable Stuart Tracey of Kent Police underscored the gravity of the couple’s actions and underscored that they are now facing the consequences of their reprehensible behaviour.

The case of Packowska and Kowalski serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of fraudulent activities on the welfare system, and the diligent efforts of law enforcement agencies to ensure that such criminals are brought to justice. Their sentencing sends a powerful message to those who aim to exploit public funds for personal gain, illustrating that the law will not hesitate to hold them accountable for their actions.
