A recent study conducted by Microsoft has revealed that a staggering 89% of employees who use artificial intelligence (AI) on a daily basis expressed their desire to utilise it even more extensively, provided that they were equipped with the necessary tools. This discovery, presented in the report entitled “The AI+Talent Equation”, highlights the critical role that technology plays in the contemporary work environment. The findings also indicated that 40% of IT decision makers (ITDMs) in the UK are concerned about their organisations’ lagging progress due to insufficient investments in new technology.

The report underscored the pressing need for companies to prioritise technological advancements, not only to uphold a competitive advantage but also to cater to the expanding demands of their workforce. Significantly, the study brought to light that a quarter of employees feel that their current work PCs lack the required power to adequately support AI, while another 29% perceive that their existing devices are impeding their productivity. Consequently, these factors have been shown to influence retention rates, as 60% of employees contemplating job transitions express their willingness to stay longer with their current employers if they were provided with opportunities to enhance their digital skills.

In response to these findings, Alan Slothower, the head of surface commercial at Microsoft UK, emphasised the necessity for IT decision makers to prioritise the provision of AI-compatible PCs and effective training. He stressed the importance of empowering staff through the deployment of advanced technology and digital upskilling initiatives. Slothower also highlighted the significance of these tools in fostering employee retention and career engagement, particularly for younger generations.
