GlobalFoundries Expands with Acquisition of Tagore’s GaN Technology

GlobalFoundries (GF) has recently completed the acquisition of Tagore Technology’s Power Gallium Nitride (GaN) intellectual property (IP) portfolio. This state-of-the-art technology has been developed to deliver a high-power density solution for sustainable and efficient power management, specifically tailored to address the growing demands of data centres.

The newly acquired GaN technology is projected to have a transformative impact on power applications across a variety of sectors, including automotive and internet of things (IoT) systems. Following the acquisition, a team of skilled engineers from Tagore, dedicated to the development of GaN technology, will be integrating with GF. Amitava Das, co-founder and chief operating officer of Tagore Technology, also expressed his excitement about the partnership with GF. Das highlighted the increasing demand for power efficient semiconductors and expressed confidence that the collaboration with GF will enable their team to focus on market-leading IP to address power design challenges.

This strategic acquisition comes following GF’s recent achievement of being awarded US$1.5 billion (S$2 billion) in direct funding under the US CHIPS and Science Act in February 2024. A substantial portion of this investment is earmarked for enabling high-volume manufacturing of critical technologies, including GaN, aimed at securely producing more essential chips.
