British Land and AustralianSuper, alongside King’s College London, have formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a science and technology innovation campus at Canada Water in London. This project is designed to cultivate long-term growth and educational opportunities within the science and technology innovation sectors for the local area and the East London community.
The 53-acre transformation of Canada Water is poised to be the most substantial development in the UK’s capital in a generation. This new partnership will provide King’s College London and their spinouts with high-quality work and lab space at Canada Water, ensuring easy access to valuable resources to support the growth of London’s science and technology ecosystem.
The signed MoU, which has a five-year term, will offer various services and collaboration opportunities. The Canada Water campus will host educational talks, networking sessions, and provide technical services to office occupiers, whilst also sharing the latest research and analysis in the key industry sectors.
This partnership underscores the commitment of British Land and AustralianSuper to supporting the science and technology innovation industries within the community. Victoria Stanley, Investment Director at AustralianSuper, underscored the importance of investing in projects that benefit the fund’s members, residents, businesses, and communities, highlighting the potential for future economic growth through innovation and higher education.
Professor Bashir M. Al-Hashimi, Vice President Innovation & Research at King’s, expressed the university’s ambitious plans to scale up research commercialisation, spinouts, and industry collaborations in health, science, and engineering through this innovative partnership.
The Canada Water masterplan already houses the Paper Yard, a modular workspace that has welcomed pioneering companies in the science and technology sectors. This new development aligns with British Land’s commitment to creating outstanding places that deliver positive outcomes for stakeholders on a long-term, sustainable basis.
As part of their commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the community, British Land previously signed a similar MoU with University College London at Regent’s Place as part of London’s thriving Knowledge Quarter.
The Masterplan is a 53-acre, mixed-use scheme that will deliver approximately two million sq. ft of workspace to accommodate around 20,000 jobs, roughly one million sq. ft of retail, leisure, entertainment, education and community space, and around 3,000 new homes, with 35% being affordable.
The new partnership between British Land, AustralianSuper, and King’s College London represents a significant step towards creating a hub of innovation at Canada Water, providing valuable opportunities for growth and development within the science, innovation, and technology sectors.
