Labour’s Plan to Speed Up AI Adoption in NHS Hospitals

2 min read

Labour has pledged to fast-track the implementation of new AI technologies in NHS hospitals. Shadow Technology Secretary Peter Kyle highlighted the bureaucratic challenges faced by companies developing these technologies, as they often need approval from multiple regulators. To address this, Labour plans to establish the Regulatory Innovation Office (RIO) to prioritize the approval process. The aim is to ensure that life-saving medical technologies are approved more quickly without compromising safety standards. Peter Kyle emphasized the party’s commitment to harnessing new technologies and innovation for the benefit of patients. He cited the example of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, where an AI program called Behold has significantly reduced waiting times for patients. The program’s algorithm can review chest x-rays and detect abnormalities in just seven seconds, compared to the usual seven to 14 days taken by radiographers. Peter Kyle believes that AI is already benefiting patients and transforming the healthcare experience. Labour also intends to reduce waiting lists by involving private healthcare providers while ensuring that care remains free for all who need it. The latest data shows a record number of people in England waiting for routine hospital treatment. In parallel, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a £100m fund to accelerate AI research projects focused on finding cures for diseases like dementia and cancer. He will also host an AI safety summit to discuss guidelines for preventing harm caused by AI technology.
