New Program Offers Free Technology Assistance for Somerville and Cambridge Residents

The residents of Somerville and Cambridge now have the opportunity to participate in a newly launched initiative known as the Technology Access Program (TAP), provided by the non-profit organization Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES). The program, which commenced on July 1, aims to equip older adults with the necessary skills to effectively utilize technology for accessing information, services, and social connections.

Building upon the success of SCES’ Tech Support Coach Volunteer Program, TAP will offer free drop-in sessions, open labs, and skills workshops in collaboration with local organizations. Trained Technology Access Coordinators will also be available to conduct home visits by appointment.

The TAP sessions will be customized to address the unique needs of participants, covering various topics such as internet connectivity and setup, app installation, accessing telehealth appointments, and finding medical information and resources online.

Colin Barr, the TAP Manager, has underscored the potential benefits of enhanced technology access, highlighting the positive impact it can have on the health and social outcomes for participants. He has also emphasized the significance of digital equity and the role of TAP in bridging the technology access gap, particularly for older adults.

In order to ensure accessibility, TAP will host drop-in help sessions every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and skills workshops every Monday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Somerville Council on Aging, located at 167 Holland Street in Somerville.

Individuals aged 60 and above in Cambridge and Somerville are eligible to participate in the program, regardless of their skill level. Those who are new to using technology are also encouraged to join. Additionally, information about other services provided by SCES, such as home delivered meals, health benefits counseling, and caregiving support, will be made available to participants.

For more information about TAP or to inquire about other services offered by SCES, individuals can contact SCES at 617-628-2601 or email [email protected]. It provides valuable support in navigating the digital world, along with the opportunity to form connections and receive vital information and resources.
